Overview

Spellbound: Art, Poetry, and the Enchantment of Reading was the first of Arts@Clark! and Clark Memorial Library’s Annual Public Art Exhibits to feature local poets – who provided two live poetry readings during the event – in addition to the usual broad selection of local visual artists. We had everything from watercolor paintings and photography to needlework and multimedia sculptures on display!

The Plein Air Painting activity from last year’s Exhibit returned, giving visitors of all ages a chance to try their hand at watercolor painting, and sidewalk chalk was provided for children. New activities included a Make Your Own Poem station with magnetic word tiles, Haiku Chains featuring short poems on one side and art on the other, and a table where visitors could add a custom-painted stone to Rocky the Rock Snake!

Visitors were also able to enjoy live music provided by local musicians John Baker, Robert Boettger, Ron Guerrette, Jim Montesanto, and Tim Quinn, and purchase delicious snacks from the Friends of the Library Bake Sale. Those who were interested also had the chance to enter a Quilt Raffle, with the winner receiving a handmade quilt made by Wendy Frieden, one of the participating artists.

The Sixth Annual Public Art Exhibit was curated by Library Director Gayle Bogel and Arts@Clark! co-chairs and local artists Liz Scott and James Vanderberg, and additional set-up materials were provided by the Bethany Historical Society. Twenty-four visual artists and eight poets from Bethany and the surrounding towns took part in the event, making it our biggest and most varied Public Art Exhibit so far!
